Miele S2121 Olympus Canister Vacuum Review

In this Olympus canister vacuum cleaner review, we’ll look at the strengths and weaknesses of this canister vacuum. Included in the observations section is information potential buyers might want to know that may or may not affect their decision to buy this vacuum.

Pros

  • The Miele Olympus was rated excellent on bare floors by Consumer Reports in 2014.
  • Has different suction power settings so you can select the appropriate setting for bare floor, low pile and thick pile carpets.
  • The Miele Olympus was excellent on emissions and high on air flow. It did ok on pet hair but beat out the Miele Delphi, despite that Miele vacuum costing two hundred dollars more.
  • The Olympus has a VarioClip to hold all of the accessories in one, easy to access location. The vacuum comes with a crevice tool, a dust brush and a carpet/floor attachment.
  • Miele is one of the more reliable vacuum cleaner brands according to Consumer Reports. Its canister vacuum cleaners averaged eight percent per hundred needing repair in a given year. In contrast, fifteen percent of the Electrolux vacuum cleaners had to be fixed each year.
  • The Miele Olympus vacuum has a rotary dial that lets you literally dial back the suction power or ramp it to the max. You can adjust the suction to suit the type of flooring you are cleaning.
  • It has an auto-sealing filter bag to contain the dust when you remove the filter bag. This is an invaluable feature if you suffer from allergies or asthma.
  • The Olympus has a telescopic wand to allow you to clean the top shelves of a cabinet, the tops of your drapes or behind furniture.
  • This vacuum is rather quiet. You don’t have to yell to be heard over the vacuum cleaner.
  • The wheels on the vacuum give it smooth maneuverability.
  • Works better on hardwood and tile floors.

Cons

  • This vacuum was rated average on handling and ease of use by Consumer Reports, though a vacuum this expensive should do better.
  • The on switch is in an awkward location.
  • The brush in the vacuum head is adjusted by a pedal on the attachment. If this pedal becomes locked in position or the brush itself becomes stuck, the vacuum loses its adjustability.
  • The vacuum’s cord is unusually short. This may force you to unplug the vacuum before plugging it back in as you move across a room. The cord is retractable, and it becomes harder to pull out over time.
  • Miele requires you to send broken accessories and vacuum cleaners to an authorized service center if you want repairs done under warranty.
  • The vacuum has a tendency to roll over.
  • The hose design is awkward. It is hard to wrap the hose up after use.

Observations

This Miele S2121 Olympus canister vacuum cleaner review would not be complete without adding a few observations that are neither pros nor cons but could affect a potential buyer’s decision.

Consumer Reports rated the Miele S2121 Olympus fifteenth out of the top twenty three bagged canister vacuums it reviewed for 2014. Out of all the models, it was average on performance but above average on price.

It lacks a manual pile adjust and the ability to turn the brush on and off. This is a personal preference and may not affect your decision.

The Miele S2121 canister vacuum costs around $370, though you can often find it on sale for around $300.

Be careful not to buy off-brand vacuum tools, they probably won’t fit the Miele.

The vacuum comes with only a single vacuum bag. A box of four standard vacuum bags is fifteen to twenty dollars online. A replacement HEPA filter is around fifty dollars. You may have to order it online because Miele components are rarely available in stores.

If you don’t buy the vacuum from an authorized dealer, Miele won’t consider the warranty valid even if you take it to an authorized service center. Amazon.com is an authorized dealer for Miele. But make sure that it says something to the extent like, “Shipped and sold by Amazon” or “Fulfilled by Amazon” on the product page, just below where you would see the marked price.
