In this review of the Carpet Basics Power Scrub Deluxe by Hoover, model number FH50150, we’ll look at the pros and cons of this home carpet cleaning machine. We’ll include details about this personal carpet shampooer that aren’t necessarily for or against the machine but may affect your decision to buy it.
Pros of the Hoover Carpet Basics Power Scrub Deluxe
It is one of the cheaper carpet cleaning machine models by Hoover or anyone else for that matter. Find this unit on sale, and you’ll get a full-sized and powerful carpet shampooer for the price of many spot cleaners. Be careful about buying used or refurbished models that cost much less, since they may no longer be covered by Hoover’s warranty. Hoover offers a two year limited warranty for this model.
The SpinScrub accessory is marketed as a pet mess cleaner. Its multiple brush system is intended to remove biological messes like puppy poop. That accessory can also be used for deep cleaning spots on the carpet like blood, wine and other things soaked into the carpet fibers. You’ll pay more for the vacuums sold with pet stain removing formula, but you can buy that separately and use it with the Hoover FH50150 carpet shampooer. The pet stain remover costs seven to ten dollars per 32 ounce bottle, about as much as the standard carpet cleaner and deodorizer sold for this Hoover carpet shampooer.
It weighs only twenty pounds, not including water and detergent. The clean and dirty water tanks are small, but it makes the unit lighter and more maneuverable.
One of the benefits of this unit is the rinse option. You can use this to spray water and pass over the area without using up too much soap or help make sure you remove all the soap out of the carpet.
This unit uses heated forced air to help clean the carpets and dry them faster than other carpet cleaners.
This model has a separate clean water and dirty water tank. You won’t have the cleaning quality decline as the dirt builds up in the tank.
It is easy to assemble.
Cons Against This Carpet Cleaner
The water tank sometimes leaks, and getting service to fix it or replace it can be a challenge. For units that start leaking almost immediately and badly, such that all the water drains out in a matter of minutes, you have to replace the water tank and that takes time even under warranty.
Hoover has a network of authorized repair shops to work under their warranty, but there may not be one in your area. If the unit has to be sent back to the factory for repair or replacement, it may take weeks.
Observations
The Hoover Carpet Basics Power Scrub Deluxe comes with tools for cleaning upholstery, not just the carpet. However, it doesn’t clean upholstery very well. It also can’t clean very thick carpets like Berber effectively.
Its twenty foot power cord is an average length.
The brushes sometimes stop rotating when the screws in the brush rotation turbine rust. Then the brushes stop working and it can’t deep clean the carpet though it can pick up surface stains. By its very design, the screws get wet because they aren’t sealed and they aren’t stainless steel. This means you will have the unit’s brushes freeze up at some point, though drying out the brushes delays the inevitable.
Summary
This carpet cleaning machine does a decent and thorough job for short carpets and small serious stains. It lets you make multiple passes with water and warm air to lift up stains and all the detergent. Its strongest points are ease of use and price. The main downside is getting service if you have a mechanical failure or leaking unit, and a design that won’t last ten years like other Hoover carpet cleaners.
