The Dolphin Quantum is a new automatic robotic pool cleaner by Dolphin, released in 2016. What makes this the best robotic pool cleaner of 2016?
Pros of the Dolphin Quantum
This unit has the most advanced navigation system in the Dolphin lineup short of paying several thousand dollars.
It comes with dual scrubbing brushes. And it does a good job cleaning the sides of the pool as it goes, not just the bottom. The design channels everything in front of the unit into the vacuum, instead of scattering debris at the edges of its path.
Its variable micron filters remove almost everything from the water. It can pick up dirt and tree needles others leave behind. And unlike some of its rivals, the filters are easy to remove and clean or replace.
It has an anti-tangle cord that never tangles up. And at 60 feet long, it can cover very large pools and deep diving pools. The unit’s water jets allow it to go down deep drop offs without breaking in most cases.
It uses almost 90% less energy than some of its rivals.
It is safe to use in salt water pools.
The unit does a much better job than many of its peers at cleaning the walls of a pool and the tile line, though it is not a skimmer and doesn’t float.
Its rugged tread allows it to travel over pebble bed pool bottoms and pool filters without getting tripped up.
It has a convenient carry handle to make it easy to lift out of the pool, and its water release system helps purge out water from the filters so that you don’t carry five to ten pounds of water back on top of the weight of the unit.
The DC motors mean you don’t have to rely on the pool pump to power this pool cleaner, nor will it slow down your water propelled pool skimmer.
Cons of the Dolphin Quantum
This price tag does not include the remote control. Without the remote, you’re left hoping that it properly navigates the pool and covers all surfaces.
Observations
You need to pull slowly when you lift this automatic pool cleaner out of the water; lifting it quickly can cause the pool filter lid to come up.
The unit weighs around 30 pounds, light enough that many home owners can carry it without a caddy. If you have trouble, then the caddy costs extra. The unit is compatible with the universal caddy made by Maytronics.
Warranties are a complicated matter. If you buy this robotic pool cleaner from Maytronics, it has a several year warranty. If you buy the Dolphin Quantum online, Maytronics says you’ve bought it from a third party so the warranty is void – but you may be able to get a multi-year warranty for the robotic pool cleaner through the website you bought it from at an extra cost. You could even try and get the model registered at Maytronics as soon as you purchase to bring it under warranty.
Summary
Its performance is moderately better than Dolphin models that cost half as much; it stands out for handling unusually shaped pools, uneven pool bottoms and nearly eliminating the need for pool wall scrubbing.
