There are some dogs that shed a small amount, some that have seasonal blowouts and others that seem to be excessive. In many cases the amount of dog hair loss and the time of year all depends on the breed. There is no breed of dog that wont shed at all, and it is important that dogs are allowed to shed naturally. However, there are also dogs that will shed more than they should through stress or ill-health. There are some dogs that lose more pet hair than normal because of poor diet and nutrition. The first piece of advice from many vets on the subject of shedding is that a dog on a good, healthy, nutritious diet shouldn’t have any shedding issues. Therefore, there is the assumption that some vitamin supplementation is the obvious approach to controlling shedding.
Is this the case, or are there other options to improve shedding issues?
Dogs need the right vitamins and minerals to stay healthy. However, it is often the oils in the skin of dogs that can determine the quality of the coat. A healthy, shiny coat is less likely to break and fall out. Some owners like to use fish oil or olive oil – just a spoonful in a meal – to supplement these oils and increase the quality of the coat. This is simple, natural and easy to administer. Those that are suffering hair loss due to skin conditions may also benefit from some Vitamin E in a topical cream or a simple massage of the skin to increase blood circulation. All creams and product must be dog-friendly and veterinarian approved.
Critics of vitamin supplementation for shedding issues go back to the idea that there should be enough vitamins and minerals for a dog’s needs in their diet. If they are deficient of a certain vitamin and it is having an effect on their skin and pet hair, it it better to try and improve level naturally through a good diet. Others are concerned about giving pills to dogs, especially if some owners give human vitamin supplements with dangerous levels. The natural, non-invasive approach is always best with these animals.
Always talk to a vet and get to the true root of the problem with excessive pet hair loss
As with all treatment options – whether a vitamin capsule or a topical cream – it is always best to work under the advice of a vet. A vet check can determine the true cause of excessive shedding and ensure that the dog gets the right treatment. They will be able to see other signs of malnutrition, other indicators of dog hair loss and provide tailor-made advice. Don’t forget that excess hair loss could be the result of a much deeper issue. For heavy shedders, with no real sign of additional problems, it should be enough to implement a better diet and grooming strategy, perhaps with some fish oils for good measure. If that fails, turn to veterinarian advice. Also, remember that shedding is normal, and don’t try and correct a natural process. Only try to correct a medical issue.
