Can I Plug My 30 Amp RV Into My Home?

I recently came across the question: Can I plug my 30A RV into my home? The answer is a most resounding yes! Not only can you connect your RV to your home electrical system, there can be several benefits to an RV electrical hook up at home.

RV Exterior Electric Power Hookup

When your RV is standing around unused, batteries may run flat, and it’s always better to keep the refrigerator running. You may also want to do some work in your camper when it’s not in use. All of this requires a 120V power connection. This will mean safely connecting your RV to the house mains.

The best way to set about connecting a travel trailer electric system to the house mains, is to use a 30A outlet. If this is a 240V outlet, you may require a 120V adapter. This converts 240V AC power to 120V. You’re probably familiar with the TT-30R receptacle for your trailer. This allows you to connect the RV to the main power supply in a campsite. Well, you can just as easily, plug this into a 30A house outlet. This will provide you with an electrical supply in your RV for as long as you need it

What if You Don’t Have a 30A House Outlet?

If your house wiring does not include a 30A power outlet, fear not. You can still connect a 30A (or even 50A) RV to your house electrical system. All you need is an adapter for a standard 120V household outlet. There are many different types of electric adapters, so you need to find the correct one for your intended purpose. This would be a 120V male to 30A (TT-30R) female adapter.

Plug the 120V end into any 120V socket, close to where your RV is parked outside your home. You can then plug your 30A RV cord into the other end with a 30A female fitting. Using a 15A or 20A house electrical circuit to supply a 30A RV will, however, have its limitations.

The RV electrical system is designed for a 30A supply. If you have a fairly large RV air conditioner, this may use a lot of power. Since the house outlet you’re using is only 20A (possibly 15A), it will trip the breaker when you exceed the maximum current that the circuit can handle. When your RV air conditioner and refrigerator are being used simultaneously, there’s a good chance that the breaker inside your home will trip, when you try use other appliances as well.

It’s not a big deal, it just be a little inconvenient. You’ll need to reset the breaker on your home electrical panel and adjust your electricity load in the RV to what is available. At least you still have AC power in your RV, it’s obviously more convenient to use a 30A outlet if you are able to, but not essential.

Why Would You Want to Use Your House Electrical System to Power Your RV?

Having your RV standing in the yard, unused, is okay but it’s advisable to keep some appliances, like refrigerators, powered up even when your RV is not in use. There can be some other advantages to having a powered RV, with an electrical supply, at home.

  • When a refrigerator is not in use, it is advisable to keep it running. The refrigerant gas should always circulate to keep it active. So, your RV refrigerator will last longer if you connect it to the house power and keep it running, even when you have no need for the refrigerator.
  • Use your RV for additional purposes, like extra accommodation for surprise guests, or a man cave away from the family. Hey, you’ve got a working refrigerator to keep the beers cold. You can even hook up a TV and watch the big game undisturbed.
  • You may want to do repairs on the RV or install some extra stuff for your next vacation. It is very convenient to have an AC electrical supply for power tools when doing this.
  • If your RV is standing for months unattended, mold and unwanted vermin can become a problem. With an AC power supply from your home, you can run equipment to prevent this from becoming a problem. Ultrasonic pest control systems, or a dehumidifier, will help keep everything under control.

Conclusion

So, not only is it easy and safe to connect your 30A RV to your home, there a bunch of benefits that come with this. For your own safety, use only the correct RV cords, connectors, and adapters. Make sure that the RV cord is run safely and that it is not damaged, like exposed copper wire.
