Bissell Proheat 2X Premier Carpet Cleaner 47A23 Review

When it comes to cleaning your carpets, most people would opt for a  professional carpet cleaning company to get the job done. But now you can get the job done yourself. With the amount of carpet cleaners on the market today, there are plenty of options that deliver quality results without the expensive price tag. In fact, one of those carpet cleaners that aims to do just that is the Bissell ProHeat 2X Premier.

In this BISSELL Proheat 2X Premier Carpet Cleaner review, we’ll look at the performance and value of model 47A23.

Pros of the Bissell Proheat 2X 47A23

  • This vacuum is a third of the price of a professional Big Green Bissell carpet cleaner.
  • This carpet cleaner has a high capacity tank.
  • The Bissell Proheat not only pulls most of the moisture from the carpet as it goes but does a fair job drying out the remaining damp fibers.
  • The high power vacuum combined with two rows of brushes means this vacuum gets your floors very clean.
  • This carpet cleaner not only picks up dirt and debris but removes pet messes, smoke odors, allergens and spilled juice stains.
  • The combined water and detergent tank means there are only two tanks to deal with – one for dirty water, one for clean water. Unfortunately, the tanks on this model are harder to remove than the prior versions. The larger tank is heavier, but to make matters worse, it has more latches that are harder to manipulate when the tank is full.
  • Bissell has a three year limited warranty on its carpet cleaners. In contrast, Rug Doctor’s affordable carpet cleaner’s warranty is for only one year.
  • This carpet cleaner is around twenty five pounds. This is lighter than the model 89104, which was five pounds heavier. And the 47A23 model does have a better handle for lugging it around.
  • This carpet cleaning machine does a decent job with pet hair, though it isn’t specifically rated for pet hair. The rows of small cleaning heads picks up pet hair and conveys it to the dirty water tank without tangling hairs around the vacuum head or generating hairballs that can clog the machine.
  • The carpet cleaner comes in two pieces, but it only needs three screws to assemble.
  • Bissell carpet cleaners on average have above average reliability according to Consumer Reports.

Cons of the Bissell Proheat 2X 47A23

  • It can be hard for someone with mobility problems or poor upper body strength to move. A 25 pound vacuum with suction this good means it is a workout to push it around the house.
  • This vacuum lacks a flow indicator to tell you when the water tank is about to run dry. You have to visually check the level periodically.
  • The cleaner doesn’t let you clean with water only. You can put only water in it, but that may waste detergent if you’ve already put soap and water in the tank.

Observations

Bissell’s deep cleaning formulas, which are added to the water you put in the cleaner, are about $15 to $20 for a standard 48 ounce container. You’ll pay several dollars more for cleaners that have Febreeze in it, as well as a higher price for cleaners that neutralize pet odors like urine and poop. You’ll also pay more if the cleaning detergent contains Scotchguard. You could save money by using Hoover or another brand’s 2X cleaning detergent, but never, ever use bleach, since this can damage your carpets and the carpet cleaner’s metal components.

On the upside, the 2X cleaning formulas function like high efficiency washer detergent in that little is needed each time you clean the carpets. On the downside, the two in one tank design for the Bissell Proheat means you have to add as much soap to clean a whole room as you do to spot clean a few trouble spots. Do not use this carpet cleaner on wood floors – the combination of heat and humidity can warp wood floors.
