5 Best Vacuums for Removing Pet Hair on Carpets

Some days the pet hair seems to turn your average thickness carpet into a thick, lush carpet until the pet hair coalesces into fur balls. At other times, the pet hair seems invisible until it creates a fine layer on the bottom of your socks as you walk through the house. Grooming your pets isn’t enough to pick up all the fur, and many vacuums can’t get all the fine pet hair or dander left after the pets have been groomed or shaved. Most vacuums can’t handle the long pet hairs shed by some pets or heavy amounts of pet hair created by multiple shedding pets without clogging. What are the best vacuums for pet hair removal from carpets that can tackle these jobs without requiring you to clean the vacuum as often as the floor?

Top Rated Vacuums for Cleaning Pet Hair from Carpets

This is a good vacuum cleaner for cleaning small plush carpets on which your furniture sits so it doesn’t scratch up wood floors and small rooms that have thick plus carpet. It isn’t a good choice for cleaning homes full of thick, plush carpet.

1. Dyson Cinetic Big Ball Animal Vacuum

Dyson Cinetic Big Ball Animal Vacuum

This vacuum doesn’t have filters, so there are no consumables to replace unless something breaks. This vacuum has whole machine HEPA filtration, so you still remove pet dander and hair from the carpet without leaving a fine trail of dust behind the machine. You can buy a separate vacuum head to use this vacuum cleaner safely on hardwood floors.

The vacuum’s head adjusts its height automatically as it travels over the carpet.

The Dyson vacuum is highly maneuverable.

One of the minor downsides of the design is that the dirt and dander tend to cling to the sides of the dust bin, so you have to clean the bin to get all of the gunk out of it. This is necessary so that the debris in the collection bin doesn’t clog it and cause it to lose suction.

This vacuum has a turbine tool particularly well suited to picking up pet hair off of upholstery.

This vacuum cleaner is a good choice for those who need to get pet hair off of carpet as well as couches using the same vacuum cleaner.

2. Shark Rotator TruePet Vacuum Model NV752

Shark Rotator TruePet Vacuum Model NV752This vacuum cleaner costs more if you buy the vacuum with a brush kit, but this is cheaper than buying the Shark Rotator TruePet and then getting the brush kit accessory separately.

This vacuum cleaner is the best choice for those who want to spot clean without using attachments, hoses and wands.

The unit looks like a standard upright vacuum cleaner but can be separated into a lift-away pod – think of a handheld vacuum cleaner with more suction strength – that you can use to clean furniture, stairs or drapes. The vacuum can also be turned into a convenient canister vacuum for cleaning in and around furniture where an upright vacuum is unwieldy, so you can clean in the sitting area without having to move all the furniture. The downside of canister mode is how short the hose is, so you have to carry it around quite a bit.

The unit has decent customer service, but you may have to mail it in at your own expense to get it repaired at an authorized repair center if you’ve had it very long.

The Shark Rotator TruePet is a great choice for consolidating all your vacuuming equipment in your quest to clean up the pet fur.

3. Soniclean Galaxy Combo Vacuum

Soniclean Galaxy Combo VacuumThis is the cheapest vacuum cleaner on this list.

Soniclean offers scented disks that release a pleasant scent as you work. Those cost two to three dollars per disk.

Soniclean’s replacement HEPA bags and filters cost significantly more per unit, though they are easily found online.

Unlike the Shark Rotator TruePet, this vacuum comes with the detailed accessories by default.

The Soniclean’s greatest strength is its light weight; it only weighs a little over ten pounds. You can push it around with minimal effort on all types of flooring. You can separate it into a handheld vacuum, but that isn’t as convenient as the TruePet’s handheld configuration.

The vacuum has top notch HEPA filter bags, and they contain not only dust and dander but mold and everything a little larger than a virus. If you need to clean up pet hair to ensure that it does not trigger someone’s asthma or allergies, this is the vacuum cleaner for you.

4. New Miele Dynamic Cat and Dog Upright Vacuum

New Miele Dynamic Cat and Dog Upright VacuumThe biggest downside of this model is the price. Replacement filters and bags cost about average for the industry. The Miele brand offers self-locking collars on their more expensive bags that trap the dust inside so that there’s never a mess to clean up when you throw away the vacuum bags.

What you get for the money is a nearly effortless vacuuming experience. It swivels with minimal effort on the part of the user, though it does take some effort to push forward and back when suctioning on this carpets. This isn’t an issue on hardwood floors. The vacuum automatically adjusts height to fit the carpet’s level. It comes with an LED headlight so you can see where you’re vacuuming. The unit has a thin profile so it doesn’t take up much space when put in the closet.

If the price isn’t a problem, this is a great vacuum cleaner for picking up pet hair off hardwood floors as well as carpets that will never create a cloud of allergy or asthma triggering dander as you throw the vacuum bag away.

5. Panasonic Plush Pro Bagless Canister Vacuum Cleaner MC-CL945

Panasonic Plush Pro Bagless Canister Vacuum Cleaner MC-CL945This vacuum cleaner is unusually quiet. It has a twelve amp motor with decent suction. This vacuum cleaner’s design is very good at getting under furniture and other obstacles for picking up pet fur. The vacuum head does particularly good work getting thick pet hair out of equally thick carpets. It doesn’t do as good a job with silky fine pet hair, which tends to get caught on the agitator brushes. The design of this vacuum cleaner makes it a serious challenge to use on stairs as well as to carry upstairs. The small head that makes it great for getting around furniture can take a long time to clean large sections of carpet.

Replacement parts are easily found. Belts cost around five dollars, the sponge filter are around six dollars, and the HEPA grade filter is around eight dollars. The HEPA filter filters the exhaust so that this vacuum cleaner doesn’t leave a fine trail of dander and dust laced with allergens as it works.
