Dyson changed its vacuum cleaner names in 2015, part of a shake up that saw price reductions and re branding at the company. How have the Dyson vacuum cleaners changed?
Dyson DC65
The Dyson DC65 vacuum cleaner models have changed their names to clarify their intended purpose. The Dyson DC65 Multi Floor vacuum cleaner is now called the Dyson Ball Multi Floor Upright Vacuum. Dropping the DC65 from the name avoids confusion between this model and the pet specific models the company has sold. The Dyson DC65 Animal vacuum is now the Dyson Ball Allergy Upright Vacuum (At the Dyson website it is referred to as the Dyson Ball Animal Vacuum). This was done in part to help the model appeal to those with allergies and asthma, whether or not they had pets. The new model comes with three tools and costs about a hundred dollars less.
Dyson DC59
The Dyson DC59 is now the Dyson V6 vacuum cleaner. Shortening the name makes it easier for consumers to remember. The name change comes with a reduction in the number of attachments – for example, it only comes with a combination tool now – but the price came down about two hundred dollars as well.
The Dyson DC59 Motorhead was renamed the Dyson V6 Motorhead. It keeps the direct drive vacuum head (the motorhead) and most of the tools, but the price of the new V6 version is about $150 less than the old DC59 Motorhead.
Dyson added a Dyson V6 Animal model. This model is similar to the Dyson V6 Motorhead but added a mini-motorized tool for picking up pet hair and a dusting brush. When it came out, the V6 Dyson Animal cost about five hundred dollars.
Dyson DC58
The Dyson DC58 became the Dyson V6 Trigger. The name change makes it obvious how the DC58 differs from the DC59 – the trigger on the vacuum. And it eliminates confusion between the two models.
Dyson DC50
The Dyson DC50 vacuum was renamed the Dyson Ball Compact Vacuum. The new name accents the specific design attributes of this particular Dyson vacuum cleaner – the large ball that makes the vacuum cleaner so maneuverable and memorable. The DC50 was in itself a replacement for the DC24, adding the self adjusting brush roll of the DC41.
Dyson DC47 Animal
The Dyson DC47 Animal vacuum cleaner was renamed the Dyson Ball Compact Animal Canister Vacuum. The name makes it clear that the vacuum model has the large ball that makes it ultra-maneuverable while having a much smaller body than the Dyson DC65. And the new unit costs fifty to a hundred dollars less than the old one.
Dyson DC39
The Dyson DC39 Multi Floor vacuum was renamed the Dyson Ball Multifloor Canister Vacuum. This name makes it clear that this is a canister vacuum versus the DC65 upright vacuum cleaner. Another benefit of the new name is that the units can be sold under the same name to the EU and Canada without a different model number; previously, the DC37 was sold in those countries but was essentially similar to the DC39.
Other Changes to the Dyson Vacuum Lineup
Another change occurring during the Dyson vacuums’ shake up was the addition of the V6 Absolute, a Dyson stick vacuum. In fact, all Dyson stick vacuums are now named for the Dyson V6 motor. The main differences between them are their colors and attachments.
Summary
Dyson vacuums as a result of these name changes provide clearer understanding of the features and uses of each vacuum cleaner model based on its name alone. The confusion as to the features for each model number and differences between the models is eliminated. And the company doesn’t have to worry about incrementing its model numbers to the sixties or seventies or use different model numbers when selling the same base product in different countries.
